Keisha Castle-Hughes was born on March 24, 1990, in Donnybrook, Western Australia, Australia she took on her first acting role at the age of 11 playing Paikea in “Whale Rider” the story about twelve-year-old Maori girl whose ambition is to become the chief of her tribe. As per her tribes custom, she was given the name as a leader but restricted to achieving her goal because she ’s is female.

The role shot her to worldwide fame and her standout performance landed her an Oscar nomination for best actress at the 2004 Academy Awards before losing to Charlize Theron in “Monster.” In getting the nomination she became the youngest ever best actress nominee in Oscar history.

The impact of the film and her breakout performance is reminiscent of that of Jamie Bell in the film “Billy Elliot,” he also appeared on the scene in a breakout performance and much like Paikea he aimed to achieve a goal that others perceived were more in line with the opposite sex. Despite these perceptions, they both struggled to overcome all odds to reach their goals.

After making Oscar history and worldwide acclaim from audiences worldwide three years later she landed the role of the Queen of Naboo in the long-awaited “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” The following year at 16 she took on the role of Mary in “The Nativity Story” and followed this up two years later by playing Sunni in “Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger.”

Keisha then closed out her teen stars years with the feature “The Vintner’s Luck” and moving over to TV with the made for TV movie “Piece of My Heart” as young Kat.

While we focus on her child and teen star years when she was a fan favorite on Teen Stars Online Keisha did not stop there but was able to easily move on to a consistent career in the coming years. Even with appearances on two of television biggest shows in “The Walking Dead” and “Game of Thrones.” Along with appearing in over a dozen features to date she also has an extensive TV career with roles in series such as “The Almighty Johnsons,” “Roadies” the previously mentioned Game of Thrones, Manhunt: Unabomber and On the Ropes.

Keisha Castle-Hughes became a household name with her breakout Whale Rider performance and has since gone out to add twenty-plus credits to her name and growing. She is a former child star success story as can be seen by her longevity.

Oh, I was just 13 when I saw Whale Rider when it was new at the movies and I had a new hero, I completely enjoyed the movie. Keisha was fantastic.
